The S.M.A.R.T Way

Our next lecture was about importance of goal setting and the principles that have to be followed to achieve the same. Before the explanation on what smart goal really is, Dr.Mandi briefed on WHY SMART GOAL is a necessity.

WHY SMART GOAL?
  • Goals are something that you want to achieve in the future
  •  SMART goals assist in “getting focused” on what to focus efforts toward
  • SMART goals help define exactly what the “future state” looks like and how it will be measured
  • SMART goals show others how their work “aligns” and relates to the focus of the school

Later, a detailed explanation on S.M.A.R.T goals were given

SPECIFIC

Goals should be straightforward and emphasize what you want to happen. Specifics help us to focus our efforts and clearly define what we are going to do.

  • WHAT are you going to do?

  • WHY is this important to do at this time?

  • HOW are you going to do it?

Ensure the goals are set very specific, clear and easy.

MEASURABLE

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Choose a goal with measurable progress, so you can see the change occur. How will you see when you reach your goal? Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you reach your target dates, and experience a sense of achievement.

ATTAINABLE

Goals you set which are too far out of your reach, you probably will not commit to doing. A goal needs to stretch you slightly so you feel you can do it and it will need a real commitment from you.  The feeling of success which this brings helps you to remain motivated.

REALISTIC

Realistic in this case means “do-able”. The goal needs to be realistic for you and where you are at the moment. A goal of completing a degree within 1 year is not realistic for most people. Pace yourself but be sure to set goals that you can attain with some effort.

TIMELY

Set a timeframe for the goal. Putting an end point on your goal gives you a clear target to work towards. Time must be measurable, attainable and realistic.

PYGMALION EFFECT

The Pygmalion effect is the phenomenon in which the greater the expectation placed upon people, the better they perform. The corollary of the Pygmalion effect, in which low expectations lead to a decrease in performance. In the current market scenario, Pygmalion effect plays a major role.

The belief in you will invariably affect the actions of you. The actions done will have an impact on what others' belief on you. This in turn, affects the actions of others and the way they react to you which will again have an impact on your belief. The cycle goes on.
